Hamster vs Jira
Jira is Atlassian’s work tracker, and it’s very good at workflows, permissions and reporting across a large organization. Hamster drafts the Brief, Technical Spec and Plan your coding agents build from, and syncs Briefs and Tasks with Jira Cloud in both directions, so Jira stays your system of record.

The short version
Jira gives you configurable workflows, permissions and reporting for teams of any size, next to Confluence and the rest of Atlassian, with an MCP server that reaches all of it and a Coding Agent that drafts pull requests.
Hamster gives you a Brief drafted from your own context, a Plan with acceptance criteria on every task, and both in your repo and over MCP for every agent. It works for one person, and it keeps working when your PM, your designer and your engineers need to agree first.
You can also run both. Hamster reads Jira for context, and two-way sync keeps it current.
What Jira is good at
Jira runs custom workflows, per-project permissions and reporting for organizations where other departments, auditors or leadership read the work from Jira dashboards. Its Free plan covers up to 10 users with 2GB of storage.
The Atlassian MCP server (Rovo MCP) reaches Jira, Confluence, Jira Service Management, Loom and more from one endpoint. It works with ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Codex, VS Code, GitHub Copilot CLI and other MCP clients, uses OAuth 2.1 or an API token, and respects each user’s existing permissions. On Standard and Premium, Jira Coding Agent generates code from a work item and can open a draft pull request, using Rovo credits.
Where it gets hard with a team
Say three customers ask for SSO on a new tier. You’re the PM, your designer owns the sign-in screens, and two engineers will build it across the auth service and the admin app. The epic in Jira has a description and a dozen stories, and the reasoning lives in a Confluence page, a Zoom call and a Slack thread.
An engineer hands a story to an agent, through the Atlassian MCP server or Jira Coding Agent. It can read the story and the linked page, if someone linked it. Nobody wrote down the call where you agreed to support only one identity provider at launch, so the pull request supports three, and review becomes a meeting about scope.
What Hamster does instead
Your team agrees on the Brief
You describe the SSO work in chat, and Hamster drafts one Brief from the three customers’ Jira issues, the Confluence page and the call transcript, with each source cited. Your designer and both engineers edit that same Brief and mark it ready before the Plan exists.
Jira stays in step
Hamster turns the Brief into a Plan of Tasks across the auth service and the admin app, with dependencies and acceptance criteria. With two-way sync on, Briefs and Tasks link to Jira epics and issues, so people who work in Jira see the same status.
Every agent starts from what you agreed
Each engineer pulls the Brief and its Tasks into the repo with hamster sync, so Claude Code, Cursor or Codex builds the one identity provider you agreed on. On Team, a Cloud Agent can work the Plan and open the pull request while the Plan updates live.
Keep Jira, plan in Hamster
Connect Jira Cloud through Atlassian OAuth. With two-way sync off, Hamster uses your projects, issues, comments and attachments as context when it drafts a Brief. With it on, Briefs and Tasks link to Jira epics and issues, and changes flow both ways.
Two-way sync is on the Team plan, and it starts off, so you can connect Jira for context first. See the Jira connection docs.
Set up Hamster next to Jira
Paste this into Claude Code, Cursor or Codex in your repo. You sign in once in the browser, and your agent does the rest.
Install Hamster in this repository. Fetch and follow https://tryhamster.com/plugin/install. Then tell me how to connect Jira Cloud in Hamster under Workspace Settings, Connections, and leave two-way sync off until I turn it on. Stop when you need me to sign in.
You already pay for Jira. Why add Hamster?
Jira is free for up to 10 users, and its paid plans are priced per user by team size.
Hamster is free for 10 Briefs a month, and viewers are always free. After that it’s $40 per creator a month, so you pay for the people who write Briefs and not for everyone who reads them and marks them ready.
The $40 pays for the step before the work item. Hamster drafts the Brief from your issues, your docs and your calls, your team agrees on it, and the Plan that comes out of it reaches Jira and every agent on your team.
| What is compared | Jira | Hamster |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free for up to 10 users with 2GB storage. Standard and Premium priced per user by team size. pricing | Free for 10 Briefs a month with viewers free, then $40 per creator a month. |

Questions
- Does Hamster replace Jira?
- No. Hamster drafts the Briefs and Plans that become Jira work, then syncs with Jira, so it stays your system of record for workflows and reporting.
- Does Hamster integrate with Jira?
- Yes. The Jira Cloud connection uses Atlassian OAuth. With two-way sync off, Hamster reads Jira as context. With it on, on the Team plan, Briefs and Tasks sync both ways with Jira epics and issues.
- Jira Coding Agent can already open a pull request. What does Hamster add?
- What the agent starts from. Jira Coding Agent works from the work item. In Hamster, your team agrees on the Brief first, and the Plan, its acceptance criteria and your Blueprints reach whichever agent builds it. Jira Coding Agent
- Does Jira have an MCP server?
- Yes. The Atlassian MCP server, also called Rovo MCP, lets clients such as Claude, Cursor and Codex search, read, create and update Jira work items and Confluence pages, within each user’s existing permissions. Atlassian MCP docs
- What does Hamster give a coding agent that a Jira story doesn’t?
- The agreed Brief with its intended outcome and scope, a Technical Spec, a Plan of Tasks with acceptance criteria, and the Blueprints and Methods that describe your product and how your team works. Agents read them over MCP or as markdown in the repo.
- Our PM doesn’t use Jira day to day. Can they still sign off?
- Yes. Your PM and your designer edit the Brief in the browser and mark it ready, and viewers are free. The Tasks reach Jira through sync, so nobody copies them over by hand.
